Description:

This pocket watch is a small piece of history you can hold in your hand. Its solid silver case shows Saint George in battle on the front, and a ship in stormy seas on the back with the Latin phrase "In Tempestate Securitas" – "Safety in the Storm." These images were chosen to inspire strength and hope. It was likely made for someone who travelled, maybe by sea.

Inside, a clean Swiss 15-jewel movement still ticks away reliably, over a century later.

Condition & Quality Rating:

🌟 Quality Rating: ★★★★☆ (Excellent)

This piece is in excellent working condition. The case shows light patina and wear consistent with age. The porcelain dial has a small chip near 5 o'clock, clearly shown in the photos, but does not affect the function or charm of the piece. The bow and crown are beautifully detailed and secure. All covers open and close properly.

About Huguenin Frères:

Huguenin Frères were well-known Swiss case makers from Le Locle, active from 1868. They specialised in repoussé and niello silverwork. Their cases often featured religious or symbolic designs. Over time, they became known for their medals and commemorative items. The company eventually shifted away from watch cases, but their pieces remain highly collected.

Collectability:

This watch is a beautiful example of both function and symbolism. It appeals to collectors of antique horology, maritime artefacts, and religious iconography. Its themes of bravery and protection, combined with fine Swiss mechanics, make it a standout piece.

How this item was made:

The case was likely made by hand using repoussé techniques, where the silver was worked from the back to create the raised design. Huguenin Frères were masters of this. The movement was machine-produced and hand-finished, typical for Swiss watches of the late 19th century. Jewels were used to reduce friction in the gear train, a mark of quality.

Additional Notes:

This watch bears German import marks (crescent moon and crown) confirming its intended market. The inscription on the dust cover references the Thun 1899 horological exhibition, adding to its dating and historical value. Case and movement serial numbers match.

The value was set based on condition, movement quality, silver weight, and comparison to similar watches. The working condition of the movement boosts collectability.

Recommendations for Care:

Wind gently once per day if in use. Keep away from moisture and strong magnets. Store in a padded watch box. Avoid exposing to extreme heat or cold. Light silver polish can be used on the case, avoiding the dial.
