Description
This early RAF cap badge features the classic laurel wreath surrounding bold intertwined letters “RAF,” surmounted by the King's Crown (Tudor Crown). The badge likely belonged to an enlisted airman during or just after World War I, reflecting the earliest period of the Royal Air Force after its formation in 1918.

It has developed a rich aged patina with subtle green oxidisation in places, lending authenticity and character. Whether worn in the trenches or back at base, badges like this were a proud symbol of the newly unified air service.

A genuine piece of early aviation history.

Condition & Quality
Condition: Very good antique condition
Rating: ★★★★☆
Minor surface wear and natural ageing consistent with age. Original dark finish with no major damage or repairs. Honest, untouched patina preferred by many collectors.

Rarity Rating: ★★★★☆
Early RAF insignia, especially those predating WWII, are becoming harder to find in original condition. This example is especially desirable due to its early design and association with the formative years of military aviation.

About the Royal Air Force
Formed on 1 April 1918, the RAF was the world’s first independent air force. This badge design was among the very first issued, replacing the previous Royal Flying Corps insignia. The King's Crown indicates use under monarchs George V or George VI, placing this firmly before the Queen’s reign.

Collectability
This badge holds strong appeal for collectors of WWI militaria, aviation memorabilia, or British regimental insignia. Its understated design and historical significance make it an excellent addition to any early 20th-century military collection.

How This Item Was Made
Badges of this type were typically die-stamped in bronze or brass, with hand-finishing to clean edges and contours. Many were produced by contractors such as Gaunt or Firmin, although unnamed variants were common for mass-issued ranks.

Additional Notes

  • No polishing has been done – left with original patina
  • Strong pin attachment on the reverse
  • Similar badges are held in the RAF Museum and Imperial War Museum collections

Recommendations for Care
Store in a dry environment. Avoid polishing to retain collector value. Display in a shadow box or keep in a soft pouch away from moisture.
