About Arthur & John Zimmerman

Founded in 1879 by Arthur S. Zimmerman and John Ulrich Zimmerman, A & J Zimmerman Ltd became a respected name in British silver craftsmanship. The company was registered as a limited entity in 1902 and continued operations until 1930. Their work is celebrated for its quality and design, making their pieces highly sought after by collectors.

About William Devenport

William Devenport was a prominent silversmith based in Birmingham, operating from the late 19th century into the early 20th century. His workshop produced a variety of silver items, known for their craftsmanship and design. Devenport's pieces are appreciated for their quality and are a testament to Birmingham's rich silversmithing history.

Collectability

This combined piece holds significant appeal for collectors due to its unique pairing of works from two esteemed silversmiths. The decorative female portrait on the cover adds a touch of elegance and charm, enhancing its desirability among enthusiasts of antique silver and classical designs.

How This Item Was Made

Both the vase and cover were handcrafted using traditional silversmithing techniques. The vase, created in the Edwardian era, reflects the refined aesthetic and enduring quality of British silverwork from the early 20th century. The cover's detailed portrait design showcases the intricate repoussé and chasing methods employed by William Devenport's workshop in the early 1900s.

Additional Notes

While the vase and cover originate from different periods and makers, their combined aesthetic creates a distinctive piece. The harmonious integration of these components speaks to the timeless nature of sterling silver artistry. The dents present on the vase are reflected in the adjusted quality rating and have been left as-is to preserve the item's authenticity. The cover is decorative and intended for display; it does not fasten or sit securely.
